Save the date!  The ELCA national day of service – “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday – will take place on September 13.  The purpose for GWOH is to invite members to engage in service work to make a positive change in their communities, build and deepen relationships, and share God’s love.  The tradition continues at RLC this year so please participate as you are able.

The dress code for the day is an RLC, GWOH, or Thrivent t-shirt, if you own one.

The most generous act to celebrate GWOH is to give blood.  The Carter BloodCare bus will be in our parking lot, 9am-1pm, to help you save lives.  Sign-up in advance to reserve your spot or just show up.  The donor appreciation gift will be a magnetic phone charger.

Worship will be held at 10am.  During the service, we will recognize the industrious and selfless acts of the Cover Girls and bless the abundance of quilts their hands created and pray for those who will receive these tangible signs of hope through Lutheran World Relief.

After worship, come on up to the Celebration Center for the final and largest potluck of the season!

PROJECTS

Service projects are planned after lunch so please stay if you are able. 

Litter Cleanup

Litter never ends, and our grounds and surrounding streets have plenty to offer.  We’ll have supplies on hand for this 8am project.  Please sign up in advance.  Project leader:  Becky Schuerman Choi

Second Sunday Social Potluck

This will be our final potluck of the summer.  Bring a dish to share and join us in the Celebration Center after worship for good food and great company before the afternoon projects begin.  Volunteers requested to help set up and clean up.

Letters Against Isolation

Write friendly letters to isolated seniors in nursing homes or recipients of Meals on Wheels.  Project leader:  Cathie Irons

Krafts for Kids

We will be helping the Assistance League of Collin County who will purchase the items for craft activity bags for patients at Children’s Medical Center Plano and we will assemble them.  Project leaders:  Cathie Irons, Brenda McGee.

Fidget Mats

Fidget mat, fidget blanket, sensory blanket, activity blanket, fiddle blanket.  Regardless of the name, they describe one of our new projects for “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday.  Fidget mats provide calming effects for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease using textures, attachments, and other items that provide sensory stimulation to reduce boredom and soothe anxiety.

We encourage you to peruse the internet for examples of these mats and then search your home for suitable items to donate.  Items should appeal to senses - color, feel, sound - such as:

•          Interesting buttons
•          Velcro strips
•          Scrunchies
•          Tassels
•          Fringe
•          Short zipper (7 in.)
•          Keychains
•          Tiny felt hats
•          Ribbons of different textures
•          Pockets
•          Fuzzy dust rag
•          Items that can be contained in a clear organza gift bag:  Butterflies, smiley faces, heart-shaped mirrors, tiny plastic toys, fake jewels, dice, sea shells, bells, coins, keys

Objects will be sewn on colorful, inexpensive placemats that are not too thick for sewing.  We will be collecting donations in the narthex over the summer. 

Lovepacs Donations

We are collecting 5 oz cans of tuna or chicken and boxes of mac & cheese to donate to Plano Lovepacs.  Look for the donation collection on the pew by the west doors.

Lovepacs Box Decorating

Decorate food donation boxes into a cheerful package!  Supplies provided.  Project leader:  Nancy Parker

Pet Beds

An annual favorite for anyone who knows how to use scissors and tie a knot.

Additionally, the Care Team will have their own project to support RLC’s homebound members.
